Indoor storage keeps your boat in an enclosed building — out of sun, snow and hail — and is usually the most expensive land option. Check door height and length limits before you book.

What indoor storage means

«Indoor» covers several things: a drive-up unit (often 10 × 20 to 12 × 40 ft), a shared warehouse where boats are parked on their trailers, an indoor rack building (dry stack under a roof) and, less often, heated or climate-controlled space. Ask which one it is: in a shared building the staff usually move the boats, in a drive-up unit you do.

When it is worth it

What to measure

Length overall including the outboard and the trailer tongue, the beam and the height on the trailer. The space size calculator turns those numbers into a standard unit size and tells you which door height you need.

Questions before you rent

  1. Is it a private unit or a shared building? Who moves the boat?
  2. Door width and height, and the longest boat they take.
  3. Is there power for a battery tender? Can you work on the boat inside?
  4. Is it heated or only enclosed? Do they still require winterization?
  5. Gate hours versus office hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is indoor storage the same as climate-controlled?

No. Most indoor boat storage is simply enclosed. Climate-controlled or heated space is a separate (and pricier) option: the listing only says so if the business mentions it.

Do I still need to winterize a boat stored indoors?

If the building is not heated, yes: water can freeze in the engine block and plumbing. Even in heated storage many owners still stabilize fuel and service the engine; follow your engine manual.

How do I know a facility really offers it?

Each listing shows where the evidence comes from (its name, Google Maps category, website or reviews). Call to confirm availability for your boat's length and height before you drive there.
