- Google Maps: public search «boat storage in [state]» in 50 states, run on 27 October 2026: 4,556 different businesses. Name, category, address, phone, website, coordinates, hours, review count and frequent review words come from there. The District of Columbia was not searched.
- Own websites: we read each business's homepage once, on the same day (not social networks), to see whether it responds, whether it is abandoned or hacked, and what it says about storage types and amenities. A chain's homepage is not used as evidence for a single location.
- States: US Census Bureau state boundaries (2023). Each facility's state comes from its coordinates, not from the search it came from.
- Lakes and ramps: lake outlines and boat ramps from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), downloaded on 27 October 2026. Only ramps tagged public or run by a public body are shown.
- Demand: Semrush keyword exports for the US (26–27 October 2026) decide which city, lake and type pages are offered to search engines.
- Visitors: confirmations, badges, corrections and prices sent from the listings. They are shown as visitor opinions; anything that would change a fact is reviewed first.
What we publish and what we don't
We publish 3,103 listings. We left out 975 self storage businesses with no evidence of boat spaces, 347 RV-only lots, 75 dealers and repair shops with no evidence of storage, 43 unrelated businesses (boat rentals, ramps, accessories…), 3 permanently closed, 1 duplicates, 5 pending manual review and 4 with no usable name or location.
- Prices that a facility hasn't published or a visitor hasn't sent and we haven't reviewed.
- «Open now»: Google Maps hours may be office hours, not gate access.
- Google Maps photos (listing photos are illustrative and say so).
- Links to websites that are hacked, parked or unrelated.
Storage types and level of evidence
Storage types and amenities come from the business name, its Google Maps category, its own website (read on 27 Oct 2026) or words that show up in its Google reviews. We have not checked them in person: confirm them when you call. That's why every type on a listing says where it comes from: «its name», «Google Maps», «its website» or «Google reviews».
How lists are sorted
First facilities with a phone or website, then by number of Google reviews and by name. You can sort by distance or name. Nobody pays to be listed or to rank higher; if sponsored listings ever exist, they will be labeled «Sponsored» and kept out of the normal order.
Which pages we index
Cities with at least 5 facilities, lakes with measured searches and at least 3 facilities within 15 miles, storage types with measured demand, and listings with a phone, website or a street address with reviews are offered to search engines. Other pages exist for navigation but are not indexed until they have enough content.
Corrections and removals
Any visitor can suggest a correction from a listing. Owners can correct their listing or request removal; we handle removals within 30 days.
