Trailer vs rack storage for your boat

On a trailer you control when and where you launch, and it usually costs less; on a rack the marina does the launching but you follow its hours and size limits.

When the trailer wins

  • You boat on different lakes or take the boat home.
  • Your boat is light enough to tow and you have the vehicle.
  • You want the lowest monthly cost.

When the rack wins

  • You go out often from the same marina and hate ramp days.
  • Your boat fits the racks (most center consoles and bowrider sizes).
  • You want the hull out of the water without towing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my trailer if I choose rack storage?

You don't need it at the marina; some owners keep it for haul-outs or sell it. Ask whether the marina stores trailers too.
